Authentic Integration of Ethics and AI through Sociotechnical, Problem-Based Learning

Growing awareness of both the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) expertise and societal impacts AI systems has led to calls integrate learning ethics alongside technical skills in courses pathways. In this paper, we discuss our experiences developing piloting TechHive:AI curriculum high school youth that integrates learning. The design was guided by following pedagogical goals: (1) respond capacity-building need critical sociotechnical competencies workforce pathways; (2) broaden participation pathways through intentional instructional center equity experiences. We provide an overview 30-hour sequence’s design, “4D Framework,” which use as a heuristic help students conceptualize inspect systems. then focused description one three 8-hour modules make up sequence. Finally, present evidence promise from exploratory study with small sample students, insights implementation, including established resources within sequence well those created team.
